The Dot and Dash Movie 3 is a 2015 animated buddy comedy film produced by Richard Horwitz Studios and PBS Kids Movies distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the 3rd installment in the Dot and Dash franchise. It was directed by Bryon Howard with a script by Matt Gullahorn and Peter Baynham. In it, Dot and Dash, now 11 and 15, accidentally open another portal leading to a more simplified version of their home world. In the world, they meet Dotta who takes care of 6 year old twins Dee and Del. But however, Dotta is planning a scheme to kidnap as many children as possible and Dot and Dash must stop it and save Dee and Del.

The film premiered on July 13, 2015 at the El Capitan Theatre, then released theatrically by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on July 22, 2015, where it received critical acclaim and grossed $785 million worldwide against a $125 million budget.

The Dot and Dash Movie 3 premiered at El Capitan Theatre on July 13, 2015 and was released on 2D, Digital 3D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D on July 24, 2015 where it received a G rating by the Motion Picture Association. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, it was released on August 5, 2015 where it received a U rating by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

Home media[]

The Dot and Dash Movie 3 was released onto DVD, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray 3D on December 15, 2015 by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment in the United States and Canada. It later got rereleased on April 23, 2019 on DVD, Blu-ray, and released on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. On November 23, 2020, the movie was added on Disney+ alongside its predecessor.

  • The first teaser trailer was released on July 17, 2014, and was shown before Planes: Fire and Rescue, Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dolphin Tale 2, The Boxtrolls, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, and Don't Let the Pigeon.
  • The second teaser trailer was released on October 31, 2014, and was shown before Big Hero 6, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, Penguins of Madagascar, Disney's ToonTown, Annie, Paddington, and Strange Magic.
  • The theatrical trailer was released on February 18, 2015, and was shown before Fast Lane, Cinderella, Home, Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Pitch Perfect 2, Tomorrowland, Jurassic World, and Inside Out.

As of January 7, 2016, The Dot and Dash Movie 3 grossed $301.5 million in the United States and Canada and $483.7 million in overseas territories, resulting in a worldwide gross of $785.2 million.

The Dot and Dash Movie 3 opened on July 22, 2015 in North America and made $85.5 million on its 3-day Friday to Sunday opening weekend on July 24-26, ranking No. 1. The 5-day Wednesday to Sunday weekend was $96.8 million. Meanwhile overseas, the film opened with $131 million, resulting in a worldwide opening of $227.8 million.

Critical response[]

The Dot and Dash Movie 3 received mostly critical acclaim. On review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, the film reports a 96% approval rating with an average rating of 8.0/10 from 325 approved critics and a critic consensus that reads "Zany and fun, The Dot and Dash Movie 3 is the rare worthy second sequel that continues the creative streak and gives us a proper return to Dot and Dash while introducing new and fun characters." On a similar site Metacritic, the film reported an average score of 84/100, reporting "critical acclaim". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an "A" rating on a scale for "F" to "A+".
