Playhouse is a 2003 American animated film produced by Mosaic Pictures and was distributed by Richard Horwitz Studios. The film follows a teenager named Issac Candle has to teach kids at a playhouse, while Genny Bucker wants to remove the playhouse, so Issac and his kids have to stop Genny from removing the playhouse. It was released on November 28, 2003, and grossed $197.8 million worldwide against its $50 million budget.

Production[]
The film was announced all the way back in 1992 at Disney, who started work. It was originally set for a late 1996 release, but in 1994, it was pushed back to 1997, and later that year, 1998. In mid-1995, the film officially entered development hell, later getting cancelled in early 1996. In 1997, Mosaic Pictures picked it up and development continued, now set for 2002.
Release[]
Playhouse released on November 28, 2003 in the United States and Canada. The film was rated G by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Mosaic Pictures were aiming for a family-friendly film suitable for kids aged 2-5. In the UK and Ireland, it was released on December 19, where it was rated U by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). In Australia, it was released on December 5, 2003, and rated G by the Australian Classification Board (ACB).
In December 2010, the film along with its sequel Playhouse 2 were re-released in Digital 3D.
Home media[]
Playhouse was released on DVD and VHS on April 6, 2004. A UMD release followed on December 13, 2005, then an initial Blu-ray release on December 19, 2006. It was later re-released on DVD on November 11, 2008 as a two-pack with Playhouse 2. The same two-pack was released in Blu-ray on May 19, 2009. The two-pack was re-released again on April 19, 2011 as a Blu-ray 3D. On October 25, 2016, the film was released separately for the first time since 2006 as a Blu-ray. It was re-released for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on May 22, 2017.

The film received an 79% rating from 87 critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 6.73/10, and a critic consensus that reads "Playhouse, being a kid-friendly film, does the job and will fully entertain your kids from start to finish." On Metacritic, the film is given an assigned average of 63/100 from 18 critics.
Box office[]
The film grossed $22.6 million on its opening weekend. By April 29, 2004, it grossed $89.5 million in North America, and $108.3 million in foreign markets, for a worldwide total of $197.8 million.
Re-releases[]
The 3D re-release opened on December 2, 2010 on 199 theaters and earned $38,490 on its opening weekend. The following weekend, it opened to 301 more theaters and earned to $146,452 on this weekend. The following weekend, it opened to 55 more theaters and earned $137,600. As of March 10, 2011, it earned $2.3 million in the US and Canada, and $1.4 million in foreign markets.
A 10th anniversary re-release opened on November 27, 2013 and earned $9.9 million in domestic markets and $4.9 million in foreign markets.

The film's success helped spawn a television series in 2005, and a sequel in 2007.
